Things That The Local Press Probably Won't Report

According to this, Singapore is the 83rd most democratic country in the world.

On the bright side, we did manage to beat 66 other countries including North Korea, China, Iran, Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe and Myanmar. We must be truly on our way to a 1st world government!

"Damnit! Narrowly defeated by Singapore again!"
- Kim Jong II, leader of North Korea

It's a bit weird - we're less democratic than Bhutan (82nd).

Note that the top 20 in the list is quite consistent in terms of corruption and press freedom. Whats not listed but apparent for all to see is that 18 out of 20 are developed (RICH) countries. So it goes against the u-no-hoo rhetoric that if we had true democracy we'll be as chaotic as thailand or wherever

Haha... this is funny.

Finland is No.1 because everyone works for Nokia and thus no corruption. And everyone talks about nokia, thus full of press freedom, and everyone use Nokia, so full of democracy.

If United states is No.14...

notice that about press freedom, on a range of 0-100, Singapore is 102.. er...??

strange... switzerland, the only direct democracy in the world is only 5th, north korea is more democratic than china...

To anonymous one,

Here's the reason why Bhutan is more democratic than Singapore. They have taken steps in 2005 to democratize Bhutan.

What about Singapore? Can our Lee King step down for democracy?

Can we have an enlightened leadership please like the Bhutan KING!!!!

BBC NEWS 18 December 2005

Bhutan king announces abdication
The king of Bhutan says he will step down when the country holds its first national democratic elections in 2008, state media reported.

King Jigme Singye Wangchuck said he would be succeeded as leader of the tiny and remote Himalayan kingdom by his son, the crown prince.

The king, who has ruled for 33 years, gave up absolute power in 1998.

He currently rules in conjunction with the government, an assembly and a royal advisory council.

'Parliamentary democracy'

Speaking in a remote village three days' drive from the capital, Thimpu, the king told thousands of yak herders, monks, farmers, and students that he would begin handing over responsibility to the crown prince immediately.

ISOLATED KINGDOM
Country is about 38,000 sq km (15,000 sq miles) - sixth of the size of the UK
Hereditary monarchy established in 1907
Only 6,000 tourists a year allowed to visit
Smoking is banned
First introduced TV in 1999
King Wangchuck has four wives, all of whom are sisters
Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is 25 and unmarried

"I would like our people to know that the first national election to elect a government under a system of parliamentary democracy will take place in 2008," the 50-year-old told the crowd gathered in Trashiyangtse.

In a speech published in the state newspaper, King Wangchuck said he had every confidence that the people of Bhutan would be able to choose the political party best able to provide good governance and serve the interests of the nation.

The government has already said it plans to appoint an election commissioner before the end of 2005 to draw up constituency boundaries and mock voting sessions.

A draft constitution provides for two houses of parliament - a 75-member national assembly and a 25-member national council - with the king as head of state.

Correspondents say the king likes to project the image of simple lifestyle, preferring to work in a small log cabin above the capital while his fortress-like palace is used by his four wives, all of whom are sisters.

Yes, the figures do tell something abt our system but to be fair, compared to the countries who are supposedly in the same categories, Singapore is in fact a safer place to live in. Numbers only give a glimpse of the big picture. I mean, North Korea and Iraq are in division 4, same as Singapore!

FUCK NS!!!

If you believe in their propaganda, the 3G SAF is now more lethal & effective with the need for fewer soldiers.

In that case I SAY AGAIN - FUCK NS and stop conscription!!! Employing a professional army who consistently train with commitment will be more effective.

Why? 'cos those Cat Y/Z uncles simply CMI (cannot make it) when it's DEFCON. If peacetime mob & IPPT is so dismal, wat u think @ DEFCON 1?

Those Men-In-White would've zharboed first!

G2 MINDEF (intell) has a dedicated hotline to them & their families so they can parachute to safety on foreign soil in a heartbeat (got SOP & manual in encrypted PDF, some more, u know!).

From their rear echalon, they'll continue to "direct field operations" in peace & safety while us peasant become cannon fodder. Why you think our tok-gong gear's parked overseas? ;-)

Trust me, I've witnessed their classified S.E.R.E (Survival, Evasion, Resistance & Escape) training - wah lau eh, very the siao on, man! They give FULL EMPHASIS ON ESCAPE because their favourite military strategy is Sun Zi's doctrine of 逃走 (ie. running away).

So, now - as if that's not enuf - you have to cover the asses of these (ig)noble friends, favourites & foreigners just so they can continue their self-serving exploitation & blood-sucking at the expense of us peasants. Eh ... we got no corruption like neigbouring countries, you know ... riiiite ... when you've got a million or two in salary PLUS PENSION AFTER 55 ... yaaahhh, who needs "corruption" ;-)

Look @ how they (mis)govern the nation - iron-grip - no chance to breathe free air! (I know what's it like 'cos MY COUNTRY DROWNED ME!!!)

I DIED IN NS - AND FOR FUCK?!!! - And had to die for this type of 无情无义 (trans: heartless & cruel) one-party government? I hope you still remember me & the futile sacrifice I made - please pray for my family & the peace of my soul .....

Rookie has a point here. Maybe he is a moron but the point he is making is fair and polite. Sure, democracy sounds a good ideal. The concept has attained great acceptance in the later half of the 20th century. Maybe in a democracy, we can have people who can say what they want to say, however ridiculous (like Rookie perhaps) some vulgar (like angrier dog)... but the fact remains that despite the lack of democracy in Singapore (somewhat debatable depending on one's definition of democracy. The definition of the word "democracy" from the time of ancient Greece up to now has not been constant. According to some, the term "democracy" refers to a government chosen by the people, whether it is direct or representative, and the govt in Singapore is chosen by the people despite the flaws of the cureent Govt) when compared to many countries, Singapore is in fact safer. This is an interesting phenomenon.

Philippines is considered more democratic. But the country is poor, probably more chaotic ... Rookie just made an observation, that's all. No need to get so uptight.

Mr Wang, I like your site because we discuss good issues. Perhaps, when people gets vulgar with sentences punctuated with references to the human antatomy for no apparant reasons, we should just delete them from this blog.

What sayst you?

Nabehcheebye!

Perhaps, (until) some people (practise typing more on their keyboard and double-check their posts before hitting the "publish" button) ... with sentences punctuated with references to the human antatomy for no apparant reasons ... we should just USE A SPELLCHECKER TO HELP THE POOR SOD from WRECKING THE SPELLING OF this blog. ROTFLOL!

What sayst you?

Whoa ... another piss-ant diana ser wannabe! Well I say: "PISS-OFF KAY-POH KIAH!!!" (for this IS your nick, no ... since you're too lazy to leave one). kpk wants the world to vicariously acknowledge his pitiful existence via his pathetically vacuous "observation" *yawn*

If you want to do a verbal wank off, don't do it in public & embarrass yourself.

If you're a regular reader, you'd know that I'm merely paying tiny kookoojiao with his own coin for comments made about me instead of the opinions expressed ... heheh

So unless kpk wants more tongue lashing, SHUT THE FUCK UP! LOL!

Have you no respect for the dead? You have no right to use his name in vain. Btw, the late 2SG Ong was not in NS when he passed away. He was a regular specialist and a trainee in an elite SAF unit.

That's the crux. About 900,000 Singaporeans were not given a chance to choose their government in the last elections??

That's why we rank so low. PAP is slowly but surely, taking away our rights to vote for a government we want. Some of us may jolly well want an alternative government despite their flaws?!

Safety is a basic need in the lower hierarchy. Some of us have moved on to higher levels.
